Erasmus+ KA220-HED Project
Training future railway engineers for green, safe and interoperable transport
IDEALTRAIN connects railway education, laboratory-based learning and didactic innovation to help prepare future engineers for the challenges of a modern European railway system.
About the Project
A European project for modern railway education
IDEALTRAIN is an Erasmus+ cooperation project focused on interoperability, railway laboratory education and innovative learning approaches for future railway engineers.
The project brings together universities from Germany, Croatia, Slovakia and Czechia to strengthen railway education through shared methods, practical training and didactic innovation.
Its aim is to support green, safe and sustainable transport by connecting academic learning with real operational and laboratory-based perspectives.
Interoperability in focus
Supporting a shared European understanding of railway systems, rules and operational contexts.
Laboratory-based learning
Connecting theory with hands-on educational environments and railway laboratory practice.
Didactic innovation
Developing modern teaching methods and learning formats for railway engineering education.
Work Packages
Four work packages structure the project
IDEALTRAIN combines project coordination, educational methodology, didactic innovation and practical demonstration modules in one connected framework.
WP1
Project Management
Coordination, administration and overall project implementation across the consortium.
WP2
Approach to Railway Study
A shared educational approach to railway study, learning outcomes and operational understanding.
WP3
Railway Operation in Didactical Focus
Innovative teaching methods and learning activities focused on railway operation.
WP4
Demonstration of Railway Operation Modules
Practice-oriented modules reflecting current needs in railway operation and laboratory education.
Why it Matters
Responding to today’s challenges in railway education
Modern railway systems require engineers who understand safety, sustainability, interoperability and real operational practice.
Safe transport
Supporting the knowledge and competencies needed for safer railway systems and operations.
Sustainable mobility
Reflecting green transport priorities in the education of future railway professionals.
European interoperability
Helping learners understand railway systems beyond national boundaries and isolated rules.
Practical readiness
Bringing teaching closer to the skills and realities of modern railway engineering practice.
